Days 4-6: French Riviera
Strolling through Nice and Monaco on the French Riviera felt like stepping into a sun-soaked dream. In Nice, I wandered the Promenade des Anglais, the azure sea shimmering to one side, vibrant markets bustling to the other. The old town’s narrow streets were a delightful maze of cafes and shops. Then, a short train ride whisked me to Monaco, where opulence reigns supreme. I marveled at the luxurious yachts, and wandered through the Jardin du Casino and the famed Monte Carlo Casino. Every moment was pure Riviera magic!

Cannes
I started my day with a $15 six oz. cappuccino, but I was sitting at a sidewalk cafe on the Mediterranean, so happy to take the up-charge, mais oui! Some young French men, and a couple of older Canadian French men, stopped to compliment me – very flattering, especially considering no makeup, disheveled hair and a Tshirt I have already worn for 3 days. Lovely way to start the day!
Cannes, France, is the epitome of glitz and glamour, famously known for its star-studded film festival that draws Hollywood’s elite to its sun-kissed shores. Strolling along the Boulevard de la Croisette, I found myself enchanted by the luxury boutiques and chic cafes lining the promenade, all offering stunning views of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Exploring the charming old town, Le Suquet, I wandered its winding streets brimming with history and character. With its blend of cultural sophistication and seaside beauty, Cannes captivates me with its irresistible allure.
My stay was at a sweet little 4 star hipster boutique hotel next to the train station and walkable to everything. Exactly the way I like it.
Staying at Okko Hotels Cannes Centre was an absolute delight! The chic, modern design immediately caught my eye, and the warm, welcoming staff made me feel right at home. My room was impeccably clean, with stylish decor and all the amenities I could need. I particularly loved the cozy Club area.
Nice
Nestled along the dazzling French Riviera, Nice is a city that effortlessly blends old-world charm with modern vibrancy. Its stunning Promenade des Anglais stretches along the Mediterranean coast, offering breathtaking views of azure waters and pebbled beaches. The historic Old Town, or Vieux Nice, is a maze of narrow streets brimming with colorful buildings, quaint shops, and lively markets. Here, you can savor the local cuisine, with specialties like socca and Niçoise salad, in one of the many charming cafés.
Beyond its picturesque coastline, Nice is a cultural haven. The city boasts a wealth of museums, including the Marc Chagall National Museum and the Matisse Museum, celebrating the works of these iconic artists. The bustling Cours Saleya market is perfect for sampling fresh produce and local delicacies. As the sun sets, Nice transforms with its vibrant nightlife, from elegant wine bars to energetic nightclubs, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re strolling through its scenic parks or exploring its rich history, Nice captivates with its unique blend of beauty and culture.

Monte Carlo, Monaco
Chivalry is not dead
Upon arriving by train in Monte Carlo, Monaco one is immediately confronted by a long series of stairs – the first of many in the city. Halfway up two very long flights of said stairs at the train station a lovely young man with a perfectly pressed pink polo, rolled at the ankle tailored jeans, and gorgeous Italian loafers, offered to carry my suitcase the rest of the way. With a slight stammer, I agreed and he whisked my bag to the top of the stairs, then with a melt your heart smile, he set my suitcase down and was on his way. Not a bad start to arriving in a new city 🙂
Hoofing my increasingly heavy suitcase up a steep hill, one of many in Monte Carlo, for 12 minutes looking for the luggage storage store that is listed in Google as open, but has a liquidation sign in the window, a generous Italian café owner watching me walk up and down the block finally offered to hold my luggage for only €10 – more marvelous chivalry AND a bargain. Done and done! I love Monte Carlo already and haven’t even started exploring, it’s going to be a beautiful day.
Monte Carlo, the glamorous district of Monaco, is synonymous with luxury and sophistication. Renowned for its opulent casinos, particularly the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, this area exudes an aura of elegance and wealth. Visitors can enjoy high-end shopping at designer boutiques, exquisite dining experiences at Michelin-starred restaurants, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. The Formula 1 Grand Prix, held annually on its winding streets, adds to Monte Carlo’s allure, drawing celebrities and racing enthusiasts from around the world. This enclave of prestige perfectly encapsulates the essence of the French Riviera’s chic lifestyle.
One phrase I heard frequently in France… Bonsoir, madame! I don’t care what anyone says about the French, their accent is the sexiest. J’adore!! I’m seriously in a continuous state of arousal just listening to French conversations around me. SO going back after my 30 day AI-generated train trip ends.
